United Way/Centraide Ottawa Honours Outstanding Individuals and Organizations at 2009 Community Builder of the Year Awards Gala

Thursday, May 28, 2009, Ottawa – This evening, United Way/Centraide Ottawa hosted its annual Community Builder of the Year Awards Gala at the Westin Ottawa.  This event is a celebration of the individuals, organizations and neighbourhood groups that strive to make Ottawa a stronger community.

“United Way/Centraide is honoured to recognize these individuals and organizations, and their generosity and dedication to this community,” said Michael Allen, President and CEO, United Way/Centraide. “Each one of them deserves the recognition here tonight, not to mention our thanks. Hopefully, sharing their stories will inspire others to make a difference in our community.”

This year’s Community Builder of the Year Award winner is Stephen Greenberg. Not only a long-standing and committed volunteer for United Way/Centraide, Stephen has been a champion for a long and diverse list of organizations in our community.

Stephen has been on United Way/Centraide’s Board of Directors since 2000. He served as chair of the 2003 United Way/Centraide community campaign. In December 2008, he and his family committed $1 million over 10 years to support after-school homework club programs through United Way/Centraide. The gift will be used in part to enhance the programs at Banff Avenue and Confederation Court Community Houses.

But his volunteerism reaches far beyond United Way/Centraide, to organizations such as the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa, the Jewish Community Campus Development Committee and United Appeal, Ashbury College, the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, Congregation Machzikei Hadas Capital Campaign and the National Arts Centre Foundation.

In addition to the Community Builder of the Year Awards, United Way/Centraide presents an Ambassador Award and awards for Volunteer of the Year, Best Community Campaign and Best Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign. Awards are also presented for work in each of our six impact areas – children & youth, seniors, people with disabilities, individuals and families in need, new Canadians & immigrants, and community capacity building.
