TURNING LIVES AROUND

IMPROVE CONDITIONS FOR THE CHRONICALLY HOMELESS, FOR YOUTH FACING ADDICTIONS AND FOR PEOPLE AND FAMILIES DEALING WITH POVERTY, MENTAL ILLNESS AND VIOLENCE.

A community consultation involving volunteers and stakeholders will begin in September 2010 in order to identify priority goals for this focus area. As a result, programs currently funded to December 2010 under the former Individuals and Families in Need and Crisis impact area will continue to be funded at the same level through 2011(dependent upon campaign results and contingent on meeting requirements including the submission of program reports).

This focus area is intended to have a Call for Proposal in fall 2011 for the funding cycle 2012-2013.

PRIORITY GOAL Assist people and families in crisis situations resulting from poverty, violence, mental health and family functioning issues

TARGET ISSUE

Many of our community’s residents face crises every day. 12% of Ottawa’s population lives in poverty.  More than 1000 people sleep in shelters each night. For every one woman housed in a shelter, six are turned away due to lack of availability.  Suicide is a leading cause of death in men and women from adolescence to middle-age, and is the number one killer of 18-24-year-olds. One in five will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime.

ADDRESSING ROOT CAUSES

Having access to programs and services in times of need and crisis is critical.  These situations range from serious to life-threatening, and ensuring that supports are in place is foundational to the overall health and safety of any community.
